What this paper is about
Students will engage with organisations to assess their communication needs, research and consult on communication issues, as well as identify practical recommendations. This practical paper introduces the use of research methods for students to conduct a communication consulting project on an issue for an organsation. This involves students identifying key stakeholders who need to be worked with in the project, researching an effective communication plan to engage stakeholders and focus on the communication issue for change. This may include a consideration of organisational engagement strategies with stakeholders, examining barriers, identifying information needs, and the communication channels that could be used to communicate with each stakeholder group. Ethics, communication engagement plans, needs assessments and communication focused interventions are some of the concepts that may be covered in this course.
Please Note During Semester B 2023: We meet weekly twice, via Zoom Tuesdays at 10am until 11am and then we have a weekly face-to-face preferred class on Fridays 12noon until 2pm in MSB.1.02 (in the Waikato Management School Building).
How this paper will be taught
The paper is essentially a supervised communication project researching an issue for an organisation. Students are supervised by the lecturer through the process of conducting a communication consulting project. The lecturer will find organisation/s for the students to work on a communication issue. It is recommended that students have completed a research methods course before this paper.
There is a zoom session and a workshop timetable for this paper. Depending on the focus for that week we may only zoom and/or workshop - please review Moodle for schedule details. There may be pre-recorded content and other material saved in the relevant Moodle section to supplement the sessions with the lecturer.

Assignment recordings will be made as a resource for you to access at anytime.
An ethics recording will be made with the key ethical regulations and procedures required for primary research (i.e. any research involving people).
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
